Mat foundations typically don’t have any piles. Most texts and codes have length requirements to distinguish between a mat/raft footing or a continuous footing. I think the rule of thumb is that if the length is 5 times or larger than the width then it’s continuous.
An equipment pad or mat is the same, just terminology. I’ve found over my career that there are often many names for the same thing.
