Dear all,
I got a problem, our sepc says :
- 4" 300# Production Choke Valve, RF (Angle)
- ASTM A-216 Gr. WCB, Stl, Flg’d,
Our supplier uses CS A1020 (Casting) to produce material up to A 216 WCB, is this normal practice as chemical compositions are different, shouldn't CS A216 material be used as raw material for casting or valve body or it is too expensive ???
is our spec just refer to Standard tests as per A 216WCB ??

It's perfectly acceptable to use anything from 1008 up to 1030 for the raw material in the furnace charge along with a limited amount of foundry returns (heads, gates, scrap castings etc.). The important thing is to end up with an alloy that meets the chemistry and mechanical property requirements of ASTM A216 Gr. WCB. This is accomplished by adding the appropriate elements, Carbon or Manganese for instance to bring the level up to what is needed to meet those requirements. In some cases dilution using a less alloyed plate may be appropriate, think 1008 to bring the C down when induction melting. Electric arc melting provides other additional means for adjusting carbon content. You really have no problem with their manufacturing technique. In many cases these days, it is necessary to aim for a composition similar to 1020 in order to satisfy other requirements such as CE or maximum carbon contents of 0.22 imposed by customers.
