I'm looking for the best material to use for a special punch that needs to withstand heavy hammer blows - It will be about 10" overall, with a 6" (152mm)long body diameter of 0.65" (16.5mm) for clearance. One end will be 1" diameter and radiused for hammer impact. The other end screws into the target part with a 3/4-10 UNC thread.
I found 6150 and 8620 could be used. Since this will be used in cold climates, some 5% nickel alloys looked like they might be better.
Punch can be heat treated after machining if needed - your recommendations/specs would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
