Material for Fixturing 4140 Parts?

Any advice for a specific material recommended to hold crossholes accurate to one another? I was thinking of making a tube with a very accurate OD of about 1.2505" and leaving the ID unmachined. It would be 3-4" long and installed like a pin in before heat treat to prevent distortion.

I would be austempering 4140 steel to about 46HRC so I need a material that has very good thermal resistence upwards of 1600F I think?

Suggestions that are relatively inexpensive?

Have you thought about boring the holes after heat treat? 46 Rc ain't no beast to cut.

It'll be a much safer method than trying to force steel not to move under heat...

Yeah that's what we're trying to avoid. That's another setup and machine time. If we can't prevent distortion then that's what we will have to do

Fair enough! I'll be watching for other replies because we do a lot of after-HT final machining and grinding ops.
