I am seeking information on a cast material that is equal to ASTM A533 grade b plate material. A533 provideds the chemistry and HT for plate but I would like to have an equal in a cast form. Does anyone know of a casting spec equal to the plate spec or have info on HT?

ASME SA 533 is a specification for quenched and tempered alloy steel pressure vessel plate. The grade B contains 0.5% Mo and 0.5% Ni. You did not mention the type of class for this material - 1,2 or 3.

Why are you even considering using a cast version of this material? What is the application? If you need a cast material specification for pressure retaining capability and could be used for elevated temperature service, I would suggest you review ASTM A 217 (ASME SA 217). Look at WC1 and specified residual elements. Unfortunately, you are only going to be able to reach a Class 1 strength level. I would proceed with extreme caution on substituting a wrought pressure vessel steel with a cast product form.
 
....You might also want to review ASTM A 487, Steel Castings Suitable for Pressure Service, where service temperature remains at or near ambient conditions. There are a number of grades of low alloy steel castings along with corresponding strength levels (Classes). However, you need to watch for weldability problems as the strength level increases.

I have a cleint who has been furnishing class 1500 cast steel, A216 - WCB, valves w/BWE w/pipe pups of WB36 pipe material welded to each end. The WC36 material is a plate material to a DIN spec 1.6368 (now EN 1.6368). This material is very close to the chemistry of A533 plate. The pipe is rolled from plate then seam welded. The request is now coming wanting the valves to be cast WC36 material. There was a ASME code case several years ago permitting the DIN 1.6368/A533 materials in two classes to be used in Section I boilers. This code case provided allowable stress values up to 600F.

Therefore the basic question is what would the cast equal be? Or what would be the fundamental het reatment be if castings are made to the chemistry of A533 grade b to achieve the physical properties? Thanks.

Can you provide an ASME Code Case number? Product form limitations are typically spelled out in ASME Code Cases, and if I read your post above the Code Case allows for plate to EN 1.6368, but does it allow for cast product form?


Second, valves and approved material for valves would normally fall under an ASME B16.34 (specification for cast, forged and plate product forms). The ASME Code Case would not apply for use as valve material.

Heat treatment of WC36 cast material would need to be similar to the wrought product (plate) form for WC36 under EN 1.6368.
