For several years I have been using the SolidWorks material editor. I have my favorites set up so I can RMB in the feature tree and update materials on the fly. This has been working fine, until today when I made a slight modification to the settings.

When you open the material dialog box, there are a series of tabs along the top right. On the appearance tab, there is a check box for "Apply appearance of: _______". I've always left this checked - and I even assigned a different color for different materials. Today I decided to uncheck it because I may have several pieces of mild steel and there are several extra steps to clear an existing appearance then change the part color. So I do not want to apply an appearance when I assign the material.

The new problem is that the material properties does not update. For instance, I change the material, and the feature manager updates. Now I take a look at the file properties, and the "Evaluated Value" for my material still reflects the old material! So I look at the BOM with this part in it - the BOM is not updated. I double checked the part - the feature tree is updated - the properties are not. Tried a rebuild at part, assembly, and drawing levels (yes a CTL+Q) to no avail.

If I save the part, close it, then reopen, everything updates. This is really strange behavior!

I know my VAR will say "upgrade to 2012", but I've still got 2009 loaded for our primary customer. The obvious solution for now is to always apply the appearance.

Any one else notice this problem? Any other work-arounds?

Remove all appearances. Right-click on the material and select your material. If it still does not change, reopen the file or restart SW. If still persist, restart PC, or call VAR.
