hi all,

i need to choose a material for a product i'm designing , the product looks like a hollow dome (half a sphere) , and it needs to be made of plastic , this product has to work in rough conditions so it needs to be pretty strong but not too expensive , what plastic would you recommend for this ?

thanks.

A plastic that operates happily in the rough conditions you haven't described.

For what application? food? automobile? electronic device? construction?

the kind of plastic that is used to make plastic toolboxes will be good, do you know what kind of plastic it is?

you still have a lot of parameters to specify, but many toolboxes are made from polypropylene.

It is better to have enough ideas for some of them to be wrong, than to be always right by having no ideas at all.

idanbrk,

How many of these things are you going to make? This affects the manufacturing process, and ultimately the material.

Your general description of strength suggests high impact resistance.

UV resistance, creep resistance, temperature resistance (high and/or low), resistance to oils / solvents, water absorption, thermoset/thermoplastic are all things I would consider. We don't know that so we can't recommend anything in particular.

I don't use much in the way of plastics but that's a starting point.
