Is 316 SS grade suitable for piping and equipment which will be exposed to ammonium sulfate slurry? At what flow velocity will erosion become a concern? I know there are several factors to consider including concentration of crystals, geometry of crystals, geometry of piping, temperature of the stream etc. However at what flow velocity will you consider an upgrade in materials for both piping and pumps. Thank you for your input!

What impurities do you have? That is critical, any measurable chlorides (even 1ppm)?
Temp and velocity will be both be critical, too slow and you will get fall out and build up, too high and you will erode. As it gets hotter corrosion will get worse.

I would suggest that you consider using 2205 from the beginning. There shouldn't be much of a price premium and you will get significantly better corrosion and erosion resistance.

Edstainless thank you for your response, i also think choosing a duplex stainless steel grade is the way to go. By the way the link you provided is a table for Aluminium Sulphate, my question was about Ammonium Sulphate.

Just go the the tools page
In the pure form it is virtually non-corrosive, but unless this is reagent grade I would worry.
In a printed reference I found a table that is ammonium sulfate with 10ppm Cl, it gets rather corrosive to the lower grade alloys.
