Hi guys,

Here are the question, could you please help me?

in gas, chemical or refining plants, and chemical processing environments, materials selection for Temperature above 400F; materials selection from 60F-400F; Materials selection form -425F-60F?

The question is far too vague;- for pressure vessels you look up the ASME Section II, part D. There are carbon steel, stainless steel and all the materials suitable for this general application. Did you include the structural materials in your question? Did you refer to the gasket materials or to the column packing materials? Please be a bit more specific with other conditions related to the suitability for your particular process, if you need specific answers.

Adding to ASME Section II, part D you need material compatibility information pertaining to the composition of the fluid. This also applies to the soft parts. Use ASME B16.5 for flange pressure and temperature ratings for the assorted metals.
 
An experienced engineer or science/technical/math individual should be able to define the question.

Yes,that's the point.

Acctually I was asked these questions in my interview. To now, I do not have any idea about them. According on you replys, what I should do is check the ASME section II and part D, right?

Neither ASTM nor ASME will show that hydrogen fluoride is incompatible with carbon and stainless steels. You need other guidance. For a licensed process the licensor provides guidelines. Otherwise you require lots more data.

You should have returned the question to the interviewer and asked for more data like type of material (i.e. ferrous, non-ferrous, plastic, ceramics, etc.), where would it be applied, contacting fluid, material code, construction code, and a lot more variables.
 

There is a NACE book called "Materials Selection For Petroleum Refineries and Gathering Facilities" from R.A. White, which can be useful for your questions.

It is a Nace International publication from 1998 Houston, Texas.
 
Another Industry Standard reference is the "Compass Corrosion Guide".

Rather than the tables of most corrosion references, after an introductory chapter on materials per se, it gives 52 major chemical production processes & the materials used therein.
