Mating Subassembly Components

Solidworks 2001

I am trying to mate a component from one subassembly to another component to another subassembly. I am currently getting a message "The mate cannot be added because the selected geometry has dependent features". Anyone have any idea on how to get around this problem?

What version of SW are you working in?
How large are these sub assemblies?
and what type of geometry are you trying to mate to?
Can you send an example as well?

I have assembly right now that that I'm working on and I don't have a problem assembling my sub-assemblies. They work fine.

Some Ideas:
Are you making the mate using a component that has been patterned?

Are you making the mate using a component that is in-contexted to another piece of Geometry?

Error reads like you are adding a mate to a part that is dependant on other geometry...hince an In-contexted part in the sub-assembly.

Which version of SW are you using?

Yes, one of the components that I am trying to mate to has geometry that is in-context to another part.

Is Solidworks capable of mating components under these conditions?

Someone also mentioned to me about turning a sub-assembly from "RIGID" to "FLEXIBLE" state.

Sounds like you have two conventions going on here. TOP DOWN, and BOTTOM UP at the same time.. not a bad thing, just has some things you have to look out for. It would help if I could see the file, but what it sounds like to me is that you are asking SW to creat a mate that conflicts with the in-place relationship that the in-context part has.

Flexible sub-assemblies are new, what used to happed was that if you brought in a sub-assembly and mated it, you would only be able to move the assembly as a unit. With flexible sub-asemblies, you can now move the individual componenets within the sub-assemby as the would react in real life. Regards,

I think it is safe to fully mate the sub assembly. You can add sub assembly configurations for different layouts. For example your sub assembly has two states depending upon in which assembly it is used. I recommend you to make different configurations of assembly. In main assembly just call the appropriate configuraion of subassembly.
