Maximum Temperature for SS316

As per the Norsok M-001, when the SS316 is used for the pressure retaining part, the maximum operating temperature shall be less then 60 degree C.

However, most of equipment manufacturers are using SS316 for the high temperature services. For example, exhaust gas temperature is approx. 460 degree C but the exhaust duct and nozzle material are SS316. Of course I belive there is no problem.

Could you explain why the Norsok do not permit to use SS316 for high temperature service?

I found a clause from the NACE MR0175/ISO15154 but Norsok did not refer the NACE code.

The 60°C limit is set to avoid possibility of chloride SCC.
One thing is the internal surface exposed to process fluid. NACE /ISO is a standard that covers SCC by chlorides.
If you look in the new version of NACE/ISO, cor 2, you''ll see that if the chloride level is below 50 mg/l there is not temperature limit.
Another thing is the external surfaces if you are in marine environments.
Here the risk of external SCC could be avoided by proper coating, for example Termally sprayed aluminium, or to upgrade to a more resistant material, like duplex.
The limit imposed on SS 316 of 60°C by NORSOK could be due to avoid any possiblity ,even if the coating fail, to have an external SCC.
