I don't really have any info to share but I think we may be hearing an announcement at SolidWorks World about Maxwell.

A Maxwell session was recently posted on the SolidWorks World agenda. It's the first time I've ever seen a 3rd party rendering application holding a session at SolidWorks World.

If you know anything about Maxwell you may have also noticed SolidWorks is the only "real" CAD package it supports. It supports 3D Studio, Maya, sketch up, which are all good applications but I wouldn't consider them "CAD" packages. Not for producing an manufacturable work anyway.

Makes you think a little?????????

Seems like an announcement should be made then. Thanks for not confirming it, but confirming it Rob. Pretty exciting. I use Photoworks, but am always blown away when I see the quality of a Maxwell render. Nice quote on the site, by the way, Rob. How long have you been using Maxwell?

Pete

I've been using Maxwell since the beta was released a couple years ago. Using may not be the right word though, playing is probably a better word.

I use PhotoWorks as my primary rendering software and I'm learning to use Maxwell. I'm certainly a better PhotoWorks user than Maxwell user. Maxwell does create some amazing images though and that's what has drawn me to it.

Stay tuned. The world of SolidWorks rendering is only going to continue moving forward and getting better.

People's remarks about the time needed to get a good Maxwell render out (20+ hours) seem like they will be a moot point as hardware just continues to accelerate. The dawn of quad core, soon to be 8 core, .... seems like it is putting ever increasingly more powerful systems into our hands. When this is realized, then I think a program like Maxwell will be highly sought after, if it indeed can continue to produce the type of images that I have seen with reasonable set-up time. Of course I can't comment on set up times in Maxwell. But, if it is similar to set up times in PhotoWorks, then as hardware accelerates the argument for rendering times follows the law of diminishing returns...

Of course they're rendering ~10K pixels wide in some of those--very huge. Most of my stuff really doesn't require any more than a 3Mpixel image--similar to a camera--or much less for web stuff. I'm betting a rendering dumbed down like that might take only about 3-4 times longer than my PhotoWorks stuff. (Glad to have that dual-core AMD now--it's come in handy many times with renderings and animations.)
