Select Measure distance from the tools menu.

Hold your cursor over the feature until either the centerline is highlighted or you get the select other tool to pop up. If the centerline did not become highlighted right away, use the select other tool until it becomes highlighted and LMB the box in the center of the select other tool to select the centerline. Repeat for the other feature.

Or my prefered method, RMB on the feature you want pick select other from the flyout menu. Choose the centerline of the feature and repeat for the second feature.

Real easy.

I have Inventor 8, I assure you that is how you do it. Unfortunatly I can't say for certain that it is the same in Inventor 7. I had just "assumed" that such a basic functionality would be the same.

I'm glad you got something to work. They must have corrected that in the later versions.
