Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has come across a tool that would help you distinguish mechanical fits(ref. I am thinking is it would be as simple as a 1" diameter x 2" tall dowel pin with a 2" thick rectangular plate that had different types of fits with the 1" dowel pin. Sure, I understand with a shrink fit you would not be able to get it into the hole, but at least you could visually see what you asking a machinist to do. It would be particularly helpful for slip fits where you are not quite sure what type of fit that you need. You could use the dowel pin and quickly check out what kind of fit would be best. I understand the tolerances will vary with different size parts, but at least you would have a good idea of where you need to be.
The reason I ask is because awhile back I came across a handy tool from McMaster for surface profiles, they called it a surface finish comparator( It is a piece of plastic with different surface profiles on it. It is very handy when you are not sure what type of surface profile you want. Just thought there might be something as useful for mechanical fits. It could save you having to make the part more than once.
