I'm looking for an official source for the material properties of carbon steel 12L14. It is covered by ASTM A108 and ASTM A29, although neither spec. provides mechanical properties. I see allot of companies publish mechanical properties for this material, but where do they get them? I want an official source, not a web page.

The short answer is that 12L14 in the form of cold drawn bars is not produced to defined mechanical properties according to consensus standards such as ASTM A108. The North American steel industry, for whatever reasons, has resisted adding defined mechanical property limits for a number of products in ASTM standards. The only "official" source of mechanical properties for 12L14 that I have found is the content within SAE J1397 ESTIMATED MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND MACHINABILITY OF STEEL BARS. And the title says it all...

Unfortunately, 12L14 is a leaded free-machining steel. And the same characteristics that make it free-machining also give it somewhat unpredictable mechanical properties. Thus the reluctance on the part of organizations to publish specific mechanical properties for this material. If you require a steel alloy with established mechanical properties, you should use something other than a free-machining material.
