What are the definitions of a type 1 seal and a type 2 seals?

All the reference materials and trainings that I have classify mechanical seals in terms of pusher, non-pusher, balance, unbalanced, inside, outside, double, tandem, cartridge, component, etc.

When people talk of Type 1, Type 1B, type 2, Type 2B, etc. I am lost and am not sure that they are referring to. If anyone could clarify on this that would be appreciated.

These are designations used by John Crane to describe their single spring, elastomeric bellow pusher seals. If you search for "John Crane Type 1" or "John Crane Type 2" you will get all the information you need.
