Hi,

A question for mechanical testing Charpy Pendulum Impact Test''

ASME XI, QW -170, Test procedures and apparatus Shall accordance to the requirements of SA-370. ASME VIII - 1'' UG-84 Impact test procedures and apparatus Shall accordance to the applicable Paragraphs of SA-370 or ISO 148 (Parts 1, 2, and 3)'' For me, I have no choice because there is only the pendulum manufactured according to ISO (radius knife 2 mm) (ASTM A370 for this radius is equal to 8 mm).
My questions:

1 - Why the difference between ASME VIII-1 and IX for Impact test?

2 - Is it possible to apply the ISO standards; even ASME IX?

Thanks and Regards,

Why the difference, because Section VIII is specific to pressure vessels, and Section IX is a service code book, meaning it caters to all the ASME B&PV code book sections and to standards outside of ASME B&PV Code.

Hi

Thank you for your response.
I know the difference between the ASME codes.
I expect a response to mechanical testing Charpy Pendulum Impact Test.
The two codes are from the same body. Please, see paragraphs (ASME XI, QW -170) and (ASME VIII - 1'' UG-84)

Best regards

The applicable construction code (in your case ASME VIII) always takes precedence over ASME IX.
ASME B31.3 has much more stringent qualification thicknesses than ASME IX when impact tests are applicable.
They may all be under the ASME "banner" but they are totally different committees with in some cases, totally different ideas.

In my opinion, UG-84(b)(1) is applicable for materials and production welds (production impact text plates) see UG-84(a).
ISO 148 shall not be used for Section IX procedures qualification, only QW-170 shall apply.
