I am Laser welding and I have a problem with spatter on the first shot of the weld. How can I eliminate this without changing macnines?

It is my understanding the first shot is hitting cold material and exploding due to the different energy absorption of hot and cold material. The gas is on and flowing about 3 seconds before the weld. This is a keyhole type weld.

Can you ramp the power level up for starting the weld?

I can simulate the ramp, but it addds to the cycle time. This is an older machine without ramping. I am trying to reduce the cycle time as well.

If you are not using any filler material that first spot with some slight spatter should be your keyhole. This is the first point of beam absorbtion and what drives your weld pool. Can you give us some other details on the application (laser, type of weld joint, parent material)?

Hi,
My laser weld spatter problems I have encountered were caused by dirty parts. Residue of chemicals from the washers actually. This would cause porosity in various locations among the weld joint (occasional blowouts ) scrapping the part. Our application always had the part in motion before opening the shutter and starting the weld. Stationary, which I did manually a few times, yielded a big spot and spatter in most cases. That was for test purposes though.

Let us know your details like Chadxyz requested. My experience was in a transmission plant.

I hope this helps some.

Scott

In a hundred years, it isn't going to matter anyway.
