Medical Grade 316 LVM

Anybody in the medical field out there? We are desparately looking for 1.00" dia 316 LVM grade stainless. Does anybody have a source for this? Largest we can find is .807". Thanks in advance.

Which spec are you trying to buy it to? I can check a couple of places.

Looking a little further I see that a company called Fort Wayne Metals markets 316LVM. I don't know who melts it for them. The typical chemistry is of a 316L with higher than minimum Mo, Cr and Ni; lower than normal P and reasonably low S. It is VAR, the contribution of which to value over AOD refining is less than obvious to me. It would seem to mainly remove nitrogen which is not a good thing to do.I don't know of the technical basis for claiming any biological superiority of VAR refined stainless over AOD refined stainless when aiming at the same chemistry specification. I would welcome any forum member's information on this topic to show that there is more to this than hype.

Fry Steel in Sante Fe Springs, Ca. also sells 316L Vac Melt from Car Tech.

VAR, ESR, or any other secondary meling process does reduce the inclusion level in the material. If you are going for very high strength by cold working or if you want electroploished surfaces with minimal imperfections then remelting helps.
Don't get me started on EP surface criteria. I think that it is a crock, but who am I.

One inch can be hard to come by. Try CarTech first. Fort Wayne is an excellent place as well BUT they do not do their own melt. They do draw down, but don't often have such a large dia.
