Most people call this "Elbow loadbreak Connector". This is very popular for pad-mounted transformer and SWGR with UG cable applications.

See the following Link for reference

As cuky says, "Elbow loadbreak Connector" or simply "Loadbreak Elbow". It differs from a strait termination kit in that when connected, all accessible parts are shielded (dead front) and it is disconnectable when energized with up to 200 A of load current. A dead break elbow connector can be disconnected but not while energized.

Under which situation, there is a need to disconnect the connector in an energized state. Isn't the better solution is to open the upstream breaker?

Underground distribution uses load break elbows all over the place. Small sections can be isolated without interrupting the whole feeder.

Can I understand that it means that feeder would have many tapped connections (joints)?

Yep. In and out of many transformers and load break taps in vaults.
