Hi folks. just curious to see if anyone is using sophisticated software to determine pressure decay rates based on rupture between two valves. So if a 16-inch pipeline was 5 miles long between valve segments, operating at 500 psig, is sophisticated software the only way to determine what the pressure decay would be if a rupture event occurs in the middle of the segment? Basically looking to validate set points for a line break actuation (non-remote controlled). thanks in advance.

Might be better in the pipelines forum, and In can only assume you mean gas?

Is it flowing?

You can do it manually, but the tools are there to do more accurately.

Is this to try and set a maximum rate of change of pressure?

Worst case for one valve would be a rupture just before the next valve no? This would give you the lowest rate of change which indicates a rupture.

Never liked these sorts of valve tbh. either set too high and they never go off or go off due to unexpected pressure conditions.

Remember - More details = better answers

'Sophisticated software' is mathmatical formulas applied to handle a large amount of data, based on given input data. As LittleInch says, the standard tools are there.

There is however no formula that can determine the practical cicumstances: where a leak would most likely occur and how large, and what your prussure difference variations are with cyclic variatons under normal conditions.

When you have found these practical limitations based on your pipeline, or based on experience from similar pipeline/conditions, it should be fairly simple to set up a controlling program.

It would be interesting to hear your conclusion and solution.
