I posted this question in a different forum, but this is probably the forum where it belongs. Can someone give a basic summary on Megavars and what they do? Thanks in advance.

VAR(Volt-Amperes Reactive)s, or kVARs(kiloVAR), or MVARs(MegaVAR) are used to describe 'reactive power', used to propagate a magnetic(inductive) or electric(capacitive) field in AC systems. Check out our company web page for a more detailed explanation.

Click the 'Power Factor/kW/kVA/kVAR Relationships' in the left column.

Megavars are the magnetising component of the total power (MVA) which is required to maintain the magnetic fields of generators/motors/transformers in an electric system. It denotes the inductive(or capacitive) characteristics of any load in a system.
Thus mvar=((mva*mva)-(mw*mw))1/2

The VAR or volt-ampere-reactive is an expression which is the component of the "apparent power", expressed in MVA, which is absorbed by reactive (inductive or capactive) elements of a aystem. In power systems most components are inductive and considered to absorb or consume reactive power (VARs). By definition capacitve components produce VARs. Generators can also produce VARs in a system by increasing the excitation current.
