Melonite Process

We have several parts in our plant that are undergoing process changes for cost savings. We are changing material to 1010 and eliminating the heat treat hardening. Instead we are going to a Liquid Salt Bath Ferritic Nitrocarburizing process (melonite). Because we have a large volume I am looking at possibly installing this process inplant. I have read several books on the process. I need to know where to go for the chemicals to be purchased? What environmental laws there are? How to rid the waste? What is required to set this process up? the process is patented, what do I need to do?

I would look long and hard at installing an inhouse system as the treatment of the parts, by the pound, is not that expensive coampared to maintaing a saltbath.

Melonite is a tradename used by Durferrit, a competitor to Kolene. Durferrit is now part of the HEF group. If you intend to use the Melonite name and process, you will need to contact Durferrit about licensing the technology. You can obtain more information by using the following link:

MELONITE QPQ is a trademark of Houghton Durferrit GmbH, Germany.

Melonite is an old trademark of Lindberg Heat Treating for their salt bath nitriding, which they now call Lindure. The QPQ process is Kolene's name for their SBN variant they call Nu-Tride QPQ

Melonite QPQ or Nu-Tride QPQ are thermo-chemical processes intended for the case hardening of iron based metals. These processes are categorized as molten salt bath ferritic nitro-carburizing baths.

Some one may correct me but I think Kolene at one time did Melonizing.

Either process is Ok.
Each company has a Q(quench),QP(quench polish),or QPQ(quench polish quench).
