Mercury Corrosion

Does mercury cause any corrosion to steels? API 571 only indicates LME to Copper, Aluminium and ALloy 400 from mercury.

Also some papers discuss about corrosion of SS316 from mercury and sodium amalgam.

I don't see TWI giving any references for their 'embrittlement at low temperatures' postulation. ConocoPhillips have done a lot of work to investigate LME, and concluded in NACE Corrosion 2010, Paper 10294, that neither A516, nor A193 B7 suffered any ill effects from exposure to liquid mercury in slow strain rate tests.

There is still the issue of whether liquid mercury might give rise to bimetallic corrosion should it drop out in carbon steel equipment, but I haven't seen much on that. I'd also like to know how sodium almagam is synthesised and gets into oil & gas production equipment.

Hg combines with so may other elements to form liquid or low melting alloys or amalgams that it almost always causes problems. Steels are some of the least effected materials by Hg.
