Does MES/ERP software really work with a project? Am I behind times knowing nothing about it? Is it just some new snake oil that didn't come out of Nigeria?

They're effective for their stated purpose, which is to collate, process, and disseminate information to the parties concerned, such as propagating delivery due dates to the manufacturing folks so that they can plan their work.

Our MES collects data from machines/work stations/processes.
This feeds into the ERP and is continuously checked against the plan and the schedule.
We now know about schedule impacts within an hour instead of within a day or a shift.
It lets us react and plan. Catching up a couple of hours is a lot easier than trying to make up days.

Ostensibly, MES/ERP can work together for JIT manufacturing, i.e., predict what orders need to be placed so that materiel arrive just in time for their need.

For companies tightly integrated for JIT manufacturing they're mandatory; otherwise, the production lines would get completely out of sync with deliveries of materiel.
