I am trying to apply a thin coating of resin on a wooden hydrofoil to be modelled structurally in ansys. Is there a way to apply a surface coating? I have just created a thin volume, but i cant mesh it. is there a specific element type i should use?.....

The most effective way to model thin structures is the use of shell elements. For modeling composite materials you can use the layerd shell elements, like the shell91 or shell99.
