Metal Building Foundation over Existing Lagoon

Hi everyone,

A coworker of mine recently ran into an issue on a project where a new metal building with shallow foundation system is to be installed over what used to be a lagoon, but which has since been filled. Recently, it was just discovered that an 8" concrete slab was left 8'-0" below grade (which was for water containment beneath the old lagoon).

Besides the obvious issue of water pooling in/around the new building foundation and causing potential settlement/bearing issues, does anyone see any other potential problems this could cause if it is not removed?

Thanks!

The concrete slab is not likely an issue. It may retain water and should be perforated. If the fill was proper and properly placed, there should be few issues.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Feel any better?

Yeah I'd say no issue from the concrete directly. But who thought it was a good idea to build a shallow foundation above an old lagoon. That to me feels like a terrible plan for long term settlement.

Geotekkie for sure... and depends very much on the preparation of the site... any possibility of methane?
