Metal dissolving solution

I would like to know the chemical used to dissolve metals & Alloys.Is Ferric chloride suitable for that??

It depends on the metals you want to dissolve. Nitric acid is likely to be the best universal reagent as most nitrates are water soluble, but beware it's not the easiest material to handle.

Dear c2sco,
The alloy to be etched / dissolved is Invar ( Which contains Nickel- 36% & Iron- Balance).Please advice the chemical for the same.

Hydrochloric acid will work as well. Reaction rate could be controled by the addition of H2O2.But check your equipment first!

I know that catalyst manufacturers dissolve nickel in strong nitric acid, and nitric will certainly dissolve iron as well.
