Trying to determine if the use of an expansion joint is acceptable based on configuration and ASME B31.1. It would be beneficial in reducing thermal expansion problems. I have parallel firetube paths feeding a steam drum. I would like to know if I can put the expansion joints on the inlet and outlet sides of the steam drum on the firetube paths or if that is not accepted. My guidance I have thus far is from 101.7.2 which states "However, flexible metal hose assemblies, and expansion joints of the corrugated bellows, slip or sleeve type shall not be used in any piping system connecting the boiler and the first stop valve in that system.
