We are working on a project where we were provided steel shop drawings showing metal stair going to all levels of podium building. The original shop drawings had shown the metal stringers being supported by the wood framing on the upper levels. We had advised the fabricator that the steel stringers/stair shaft would need to be "self-supporting)", and the use of steel columns (HSS in this case) would be necessary to support the stringers down to the podium level. Architect is now asking for the specific code stating that the steel stringers cannot attach to the wood framing on the upper levels. We understand that this is some sort of code relating to fire safety, but where in the code does it specifically state this? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Note: CMU shaft wall stops at second level(top of podium level). Thanks in advance.
