I am preparing to take the Metallurgical PE exam this October (2007). I am going through the TMS study guide and have noticed that the solutions do not use significant digits. You have to carry each set of calculations through your calculator (or write each number all the way out) to have your answers match the solution. Is the test also like this?

When I took the test in 2003, which was multiple choice and similar in format to the TMS study guide, you needed a calculator and in most cases the final answer is rounded up or down;

For example;

you use your calculator for a problem and the display reads 95.321 N. The answer most likely on the exam would be 95 N.
Don't fret these kind of details, as you plug and chug through problems that require a calculator you will do fine.

For other information regarding the exam, use the search feature above and you will find other threads related to the Metallurgical PE exam preparation.

Good Luck

You have a lot more to worry about. I actually liked the test. The version that I took in the early 90's was a little different. The calculations were mostly for multiple choice, and most of the long answer required a lot of description, not just numbers.
