when methane is used as a an engine fuel, heavy deposits form inside the engine as a result of a high sulfer content in the methane. Would a hydrogen generator help in burning this sulfer to help reduce or eliminate the deposites in the engine & oil ?

As sulfur is not a constituent of methane ( CH4 ) and sulfur does not exist as a gas at STP, I think it’s safe to say that Hydrogen Sulfide ( H2S ) is the carrier of the sulfur. Although H2S has some heating value, it is usually better to remove it than burn it. Any Gas Production text from 1900 to1940 will give ways of removal.

... and no amount of hydrogen (aside from 100% substitution) will remove the sulfur or compensate for the presence of this contaminant in the fuel stream.

What is supplying your methane? A digester or landfill. The deposits can be from teh H2S, from siloxane, lube oil ash, organics in fuel stream, or combination of these.

There are a few companies offering fuel treatment systems for biogas engines, and it appears the technology is improving as fuel cells are using more biogas.

A couple of links,

have worked with these systems in Europe, not sure if they have a US rep.

There are also a number of companies like SDP Energy, Finning CAT, LFG&E and Jenbacher that supply treatment systems as part of their overall packages.

Hope that helps

to catserveng : mostv methane applications in this area are from land fills. The dairy I work at is fairly sure of installing a digester soon, this is where the interest is . THANKS
