People,

We have a methanol injection line to the wellheads. This is very unlikely to be used but the potential is there. I don't know the concentration of Methanol if it is going to be used and as a result, viton seals are not good enough where the media has methanol concentration. Do you know more details about this and do you know what is a better seal to use in this application?

utlandmah,
it sounds a little strange to me to hear that VitonTM "is not good enough" with methanol... apart for concentration, are there other issues (temperature, pressure and/or dirt)?

What happens to VitonTM seals in such a service?

There are many VitonTM grades: in the same website mentioned by hydtools, you can find a "Viton Selection Guide" which can help you selecting the best one for your service:

If you'd like to check out other compounds, like the more expensive KalrezTM, you can find other "Application Guides" in the relevant sections of the same website:

Hope this helps, 'NGL

Gents,

I am in Australia and the valves suppliers here use James Walker O-Rings. In order to increase the resistance of an o-ring against methanol (which cause O-ring swells or volume increase) you need to increase fluorine content of the O-ring which this has an adverse effect on low temp resistability of the o-ring. A better material to use where methanol exists, is HNBR 958!

Marcell
