Microstrip antennas vs simulation

Hi all,

I used the article "Design of rectangular Microstrip Patch antennas for the 2.4 Ghz band" to design my own antenna, but as I don't have a lab at disposition to test this antenna, I desided to make a simulation of the antenna model from the paper and then to simulate "my own antenna"...

1) Using the formulas given in the article, I found a different result for the patch dimention : 38,6 mm instead of 36.84 mm given...

2)I simulate the original patch (36.84 mm) using EMPiCASSO ( )but found different results...

3)Even the corrected patch gives differents results once simulated with EMPiCASSO...

4) - TIP!! Go to visit this site I used to get more info...

I'd like to know if someone had the same experience and if there is some explainations for this !!??

Can I trust in the article or in the simulation ?

Suggestion: The most appropriate party to contact would be the software developer, i.e. empicasso. They are supposed to accept challenges and have the edge of knowing what is behind encrypted programs they developed. Undoubtedly, the latter somewhat disadvantages volunteers contributing to this Forum.

I already contacted EMPiCASSO's technical support to try to get some explainations, I sent my file... but it seemed that my simulation was correct...

So I did the calculation again with a Mathlab Program and found a mistake in the paper !!
=> The last formula (page 28) that gives L=(c/(2*f0*sqrt(Eps_eff))-2*deltaL... the autor calculate L'=L-2*deltaL, I mean that he took the initial value (40.1 mm)instead of 41.82 mm if you calculate with Eps_eff instead of Epsr !!


Is that correct ??

Now I've another few questions... I have no laboratory here to perform experiments on my design so I must to calculate and simulate until to get a good result.

1) How can I be sure to get accurates results by simulation without to test all the time ?

2) Can someone gives me some idea of some paint or material I can use as "superstrate" (on the microstrip patch) to improve radiations carracteristics ?

I'm Talking about the article "Design of Rectangular Microstrip Patch Antennas for the 2.4 Ghz Band " Ammann, Max ... First part (probe feed), for the calculation of L.

Please tell me if I'm right or wrong !
