I would like to know what the differences are of forehand/backhand (leading or trailing) techniques of mig welding are. I have read conflicting statements as to the proper procedure. I am not a welding engineer or even a master welder, but as a master auto tech I do get to weld occasionally.

According to the my text book you the welding arc should lead, point toward the direction of travel and away from the weld pool., approx 10 to 15 degrees from the vertical. The danger is that you can weld on top of your molten pool creating an unfused weld. If you visit my web site and view the article on how to avoid weld failure it includes a macro section of a MIG weld with no fusion. It’s a good idea to do practice welds and test them by bending in a vice. For flux cored wire you have to trail the arc like stick welding otherwise you get slag lines down either side of your weld bead.

The old timers say "with slag you drag", each method has it's own criteria...Mike

Hello Welding1:
I went to visit your website, and it's not up, are planning to put it back up anytime soon? I was hoping to find some useful information about welding procedure for MIG and FLUX, even on electrical welding,
thanks

There is no problem with the website. The problem occurs in the formatting used by this website (Eng-Tips) to display hyperlinks-- an extra space is being inserted onto the end of the address, which is why you have not been able to access the site. Type it in manually or use the link below:

By the way, the gowelding.com website is extremely good. I just checked it out (sorry John) and it has a huge amount of information on welding, metallurgy, fatigue and fracture, etc. I doubt you will find this amount of high-quality information anywhere outside of reference/text books, university course notes, etc. Definitely bookmark this one![2thumbsup]
