Hi, We are Designing & constructing Refinery in Abu Dhabi. As the shell course were erected in last year December now when we are placing platform / pipe stiffener, the vertical weld clearance of 150 mm as API-650 is not achieving.

Can anyone pls tell me the as how to rectify this.
PS :- Removing the stiffener or moving the shell is not possible now.
Also pls advice if any other standard can be followed.

a drawing would help here to see what is and isn't possible. Is the stiffener horizontal? parallel to the weld? Can you bridge the weld?

What is the ref in API 650?

Please do a little more work yourself first.

Nawazz91,

What is your shell plate material ?

If you material is group I,II,III or IIIA there is no restriction in API 650. But if your material is group IV, V and VI there is 150 mm clearance from the vertical.

If there is no chance to modified the supports then you need to get approval from the tank designer then get the same to the client or its PMC.
