Hi all, I am looking for some insight on the following situation.
I am designing a small one story addition onto an existing building. The addition is about 150 sf, and it is being detailed independently from the existing structure. Thus, it will have its own lateral system. My question is with regards to minimum wind loading. If the addition is detailed with expansion joints adjacent to the existing building edges, there won't be a net windward and leeward wind pressure applied to the addition. For instance, depending on the wind direction, only windward load or leeward load would be applied to the structure. Now, if those individual pressures do not add up to the minimum 16 psf, would I then technically have to design the addition for 16 psf of load rather than something far less in magnitude? This is a grey area in the code, and I would appreciate any feedback you may have.
