We have a pipe carrying superheated steam (>60 bar at 500 deg C) and would like to put in a couple of small mitred joints (<4 deg) to bring it back into line. The code seems to be OK but I am not quite so sure if there is anything else I should be worried about. I am on site and without the usual resources this weekend.
Any advice?
According to ASME B31.1, Section 104.3.3, if a mitre is widely spaced (table D-1 mitre spacing at centre line > mean pipe radius x (1 + tan (angle)) and the ½ angle between adjacent mitre axes is less than 9 x square root of (nominal wall thickness / mean pipe radius. Then it is just considered a BW joint.
Sch 160 pipe (304H welded):
Dia 14”, thick 1.406; mitre angle < 4.0 degrees
