mixing ratios in a batch process

Goodday. What is the minimum mixing ratio in a batch process? Say l have a 10 000L of crude oil and l want to add 0.1% phosphoric to the oil. To what volume should l dilute my acid to get effective mixing in a batch mixer? l figured if l mix 10L of acid to 10 000L of oil is too much of a volume difference. My question is then what is the minimum volume mixing ratios by experience?

Batch implies a fixed volume?

What is your mixing mechanism?

At that volume some sort of injection into the incoming flow and allowing enough time to mix would be better.

we mix using an agitator, 30rpm. We fill oil to a fixed volume, then add phosphoric after and mix using an agitator for 20-30mins. But l am questioning the effectiveness of mixing?

There is no magic ratio, and often no need for predilution. A common requirement is to be able to measure each component to at least one percent accuracy. So you may want to use different weigh scales for different components. Or predilute the small components so that the same scale can be used for all additions.

If the small component is a catalyst it may need to be predilute so it can disperse more quickly and not cause too rapid a reaction.

You're not getting good mixing probably because this is a phosphoric acid solution made up with water as solvent, which is not miscible in oil. So you are getting a coarse emulsion which probably splits out again into 2 liquid phases after a short while. Find a donor solvent which has good miscibility for both acid and oil - can you use acetone or similar? Keep water out.

To add to my previous reply.
Attached Handbook about phosphoric acid.
Another issue with product is corrosion of steel.
Good luck

If this is for purification of edible oil, try acetic acid as H3PO4 solvent rather than acetone.
