Modeling Asphalt behaviour using ABAQUS: Interaction between aggregate and mastic

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction with a method/tutorial on how to model the interaction between a viscoelastic material (mastic) and a solid material (aggregate)? I have tried treating as two parts but an error of 'the ratio of deformation speed to wave speed exceeds 1,000 in at least one element' occurs.
Ultimately, I'd like to model the behaviour of the aggregate in mastic when a load(impact force) hits the top of the microscale model to understand how the aggregate translates/rotates.
I really appreciate any pointers or suggestions, thanks.

The choice of interaction type depends on how both components are modeled. Can you share some screenshots showing the model and describe the way you placed these regions together ?

Hi FEA way, I've created separate parts for the aggregate and mastic, creating faces for each element. Then using assembly made sure they are in contact before applying interactions with the rigid plates but also cohesive constraints between the mastic and aggregate.
Many thanks

This type of interaction (cohesive contact) should be a good choice for the kind of simulation you want to perform. The error that you get requires further investigation but it might be related to mesh density (too coarse mesh) or mistake in values/units. Double-check all definitions of loads, material properties and so on.
