modeling colour

How can I set the colour of features as I am modeling them??

I am designing on a casting set to blue...
I want all the features I model to appear in red.

I know how to change them after the fact but I don't want to do that.

I also know how to set NX to get "new face properties" from the parent or the part defaults...

How do I set the part defaults???

You set the Part Default under...

Preferences -> Object...

...but I suspect that that you're not going to get exactly what you want since NX doesn't work that way. The best you can do is to set your default color (per the workflow above) to RED (note that this is a Part Specific setting which means that if you're using a modeling tempalte part you will need to make the change there). Also go to...

Preferences -> Modeling...

...and change the 'New Face Properties from' to 'Part Defaults'. When you create your base casting it will start out as RED but you then immediately edit it, changing it's color to BLUE. Now when you add features, the new faces being created will now come in as RED, which is what you're looking for.

Thanks John,

But I don't think it will work for me, seeing as I will be modelling many unique downstream operations, all of which I'd love to see in it's own colour.

I think I'll just use "CTRL-J" and edit each face as I design them.

Actually, it does work exactly as I expect it to!!!

I changed the PREFERENCE > OBJECT to whatever colour I want, I change PREFERENCE > MODELING to "Part defaults" and it works like a charm.

The original casting colour is irrelevant and I can change the colour as often as I like!

Yes, I forgot about the idea that you could just do this on-the-fly as needed. In fact, you could probably create a simple program which would index the colors through a simple sequence of predefined colors and which would be triggered by a user-defined icon on one of your toolbars (I'll have to think about this one).
