Hi

I'm sure this question must have been asked before but I can't find a solution.

I am modelling a subsea spool in Abaqus using pipe31 elements to model the pipe and the bends. What is the normal practice for accounting for the various effects on the bends:
1. Bend thinning - the extrados will be approx 10% thinner than nominal and the intrados 10% thicker. I could conservatively reduce the wall thickness of the bends to be 10% lower but that reduces the stiffness too much causing the stress to be much higher than normal
2. Torus effect - extrados of the bend is longer so attracts a higher load from internal pressure.
3. Bending stress intensification - due to pressure trying to open the bend. I suspect Abaqus accounts for this within the bend element

Design code is PD8010 which just asks for torus and bend thinning to be accounted for but doesn't suggest an appropriate method.

Thanks
