Modelling Wear in Abaqus 1

Evening all,

Has anyone had any experience modelling general wear (and 3rd body abrasive wear) in abaqus between two surfaces in contact passing over one another? I have seen some researchers creating a model running a number of cycles (e.g. 1 million), then assessing the deformation/wear after that period. Using a boolean operation to remove material and re-running the test. They can then assess total material loss after 'x' million of cycles.

I wonder if its also possible to introduce debris into the model? e.g. during a disc on disc friction wear test we can introduce pariculates during the roations of the disk to test the performance of the disc under 3rd body abrasive wear.

Any feedback/thoughts/examples people could forward on would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Some of my colleageus are working on wear at the moment. They are using adaptive meshing to control the position of the surface as it is worn away under x-number of wear cycles. They haven't introduced particulates yet, something like that would bring alot of challenges I imagine, although I have seen papers based on surface erosion due to particle impacts simulated in Abaqus.

Some useful papers:

Thank you very much for your much appreciated post.
