What is the application of modified compression field theory...I know it is used in designing for shear failures based on strains in beams but what are the useful application?

Thank you IDS, are their special areas of application because we can as well design for shear forces without using the modified Compression Field Theory...So I would love to know
 
OK, I now see where you are coming from.

The problem is that using standard shear design methods you can get widely different results depending on which method you use, and the results are not always conservative.

The modified compression field theory provides a method that is based on shear failure mechanisms (rather than essentially empirical results) that has been correlated against numerous experimental results, and is starting to be incorporated in a number of codes of practice.

So I would say you would use it:
1) As standard practice if it is incorporated in the applicable design code.
2) Under any design code if you think shear failure may be a critical design condition.
3) Forensic investigation of any failure that may be shear related.
4) For any theoretical investigation of shear behaviour.
