I am working on a marine diesel application that is using MAN B&W turbochargers. MAN has some pretty strict requirements for the moisture of the intake air. They require 100% of drops > 13 microns and 98% of drops > 5 microns. I am guessing that they are try to keep out salts and contaminants for turbo life but does anyone have a more detailed rational be the requirements? We are trying to get an explanation from MAN.

It could be due to blade erosion. I've seen photos of comopressor blades that have been worn down due to water injection before the turbo.
