I want to design a <b>monorail </b> system that will suspend 5 tons.<br>What type and size of beam would suffice?The beam will span approximately 12 feet, anchored to concrete walls.
Glen, Not being an engineer but using overhead cranes for most of my working career, I would be hesitant to suspend anything such as a momorail from a block wall. The way I've seen and used a crane myself the shock loads are quite large, especially if you have to rotate large items and you don't have them slung close to the center of rotation. I've seen a monorail not supported by block but tied into it, supposidly for bracing, break over 90% of the mortar joints rendering the wall unsafe. Just my two cents worth, I'm sure you'll get better comments from more knowledgable people..Mike
im a site engineer with a structural steel company. i agree with the other post that having the beam anchored into concrete is very risky all crane rails i have seen are fixed to a steel frame by large welded connections.it would take a fairly large beam to suspend 5000kg and would need to be properly designed by a struct.eng. who would need to look at the concrete wall also
