During monthly churn test for electric pump, do we need to close main discharge valve and pressure should be exerted on discharge assembly or we should keep main discharge valve open for all the sytem to bear pressure including fire sprinklers.
(Because churn pressure should be 140% of rated pressure at no-flow).
Kindly guide me through this, I've to do that first time.

Depends....

What is the pump churn pressure? ( the pressure on the discharge side gauge of the pump while the pump is running)
What are the jockey pump settings, pump on pump off? ( turn off the fire pump and see what pressure the jockey pump comes on and off at).

If your pump churns at 150 psi but the system pressure is 120 psi that is a pretty good hit each month. Adjust the jockey pump so it is within 5-10 psi the pump churns at. The pump churns at 150 adjust the jockey pump to come on at 145 psi and go off at 150 psi.

If pressure exceeds 175psi when the pump is running make sure all piping, fittings and sprinklers are rated for the excess pressure.

Also the pump should be started via drop in pressure NOT via the start button. Drop the pressure on the fire pump sensing valve. If you have no idea what I just said contact a fire pump contractor for training.

Check this link for great pump info

I did it right (this is the first time I've ever used Dropbox) using the link below you should be able to download the fire pump tutorial. I hope this works.

The tutorial was created by a long-time friend of 37 years that knew his stuff when it came to anything having to do with a fire pump.
Look for sprinklerdsg2:: in the thread
