More Questions on 201 Stainless vs. 304 Stainless 1

Hello All,

I have read some previous threads on a comparison between 201 and 304 stainless and still have some questions. At my company I'm planning on using stainless on a water holding tank that will be inside our plant. City water. The plant temperature is usually around 34 F and it is a wash down environment with quaternary soaps and chloride based soaps applied to most equipment nightly during cleanup. I'm wondering if a tank constructed of 201 stainless could hold up for years to come in this type of environment. If so, which type of finish should be used?

One more thing I should add. We currently are using 304 stainless for all equipment with no problems.

You will have no problem with 201. Unless there is some reason to have it extra pretty, get a 2B finish. The 2B will have better corrosion resistance than polished. Since you're not forming it heavily specify the lowest nickel possible. It will probably be produced by Allegheny.

As on option you might want to call Outokumpu and see if you can get LDX2101. It is less expensive than 304 with todays surcharges. It would be a good alternate to 201.
The LDX2101 actually has better corrosion resistance and higher strength than 304.

Does anyone have any idea as to the availability of LDX2101? In the past I've looked into replacing type 304 with type 201 on one of our products and was informed by our supplier that type 201 was not readily available in anything more than a sample quantity.

Unfortunately service centers have fought against 201 because they don't want to stock 201 and 304. Enquire directly to Allegheny about it.

The 201 subject is a major sore spot between mills and distributors right now. The other side of the coin is that Allegheny is trying to put pressure on distributors to stock two or three grades of 201, maybe they are just hoping to sell more material for the inventory build?
There are three domestic mills running 201 right now. You should be able to find some. Do be careful, it isn't just lower cost 304.

LDX2101 is a bit touchy. The only stock that I know of in the US is at Rolled Alloys. the product forms and sizes are still a bit limited. Mill sized orders are being filled directly by Outokumpu (coiled sheet, coiled plate, and bar).

For everyone's information... the API Sub Committee on Aoveground Storage Tanks is currently working on a agenda item to add ASTM A240-Type 201 materials (Types 201-1, 201-2 and 201LN) to API Standard 650.

Does anyone have any data on the corrosion resistance of 201 compared to 304 or 316 in dilute sulfuric acid or dilute carbonic acid?
The application is for use in the flue of a condensing boiler.

Allegeny's website has a "blue sheet" which gives a lot of corrosion comparisons. Those environments are so non-agressive for stainless that I wouldn't see any problem.

By the way the strength of 201 increases with decreasing temperature all the way to absolute zero.
