I have been in HVAC-R repair for 5 years but I don't know everything. Yet.
I am looking at a comercial kitchen hood vent fan, 115 volt, belt drive 3/4 hp 1725 rpm motor.
Motor is overheating and sometimes shutting off on the thermal overload.
Amp draw is the same with the blower wheel connected and without, measured at 13 amps with the motor data showing 13.2 as FLA.

Question is, how to tell if motor is bad or problem is bearings/drag from the blower. If I remember right, a motor not under load will run at high amps, as well as under increased load so I am thinking motor is okay but I would like to know for sure.

Thanks for your time.

the motor sounds bad ............sounds like the bearings are goig on it. The motor under no load has little amp draw. Can you try and rotate the motor with ease with your hand ?
