I have an electric motor of European manufacture with 6 leads coloured, yellow, brown, green, black, blue and white.

The green wire is not earth, there is a green/yellow wire which is connected to the frame of the motor.

The motor is dual voltage, 230 or 380V depending upon if it connected in delta or star. I want to use it on 380V.

I have belled the wires out and have the following:

black --> green
blue --> white
yellow --> brown

But which colours are for the star point and which are for the supply? I've searched the internet without success.

The thought of all the differing connection combinations makes my head spin!

Does anyone know, please?

What make is the motor? I am almost certain those colours are used by ABB. If its the case try the ABB website or give them a call. I have the info at work but am off now till next week.

Here is a link to the Hanning website. It includes worlwide contact details. The easiest way to solve the problem is to give them a call or e-mail them and then ask them the question, make sure you have all the motor name plate details to hand when you call them. If they cant provide the info you need come back to the forum and someone will explain how to identify the starts and finishes of each phase.

ok,

To make a STAR connection:
Connect GREEN, WHITE and BROWN together. This makes your STAR-point.
Connect your supply phase wires to BLACK, BLUE and YELLOW.
If you now measure between your STAR-point and a phase you will measure 220Volt
Between the phases you will measure 380Volt

To make a DELTA connection:
Connect GREEN and BLUE
WHITE and YELLOW
BROWN and BLACK
Connect one phase to GREEN and BLUE
one phase to WHITE and YELLOW
one phase to BROWN and BLACK

So in your case, use the last example.

Didn't this motor come with small little connection plates in the junctionbox? Normaly European motors have a very good junctionbox on the motor. The wires are allready connected in the junctionbox, the only thing you have to do is place the little connectionplates in the right place to make it a STAR or DELTA motor.
This instead of USA motor, where the wires are all loose in the junctionbox and you have to connect them all yourself.

Mpyke?
Can you clarify if the leads are loose or connected to the terminal block please.

By the way, I was thinking, if they are using coloured wires, the motor is probably made for the USA market, and so, they didn't use a terminal block/junction box.

I have never seen a motor (who is ment for the european market) with a combination of a terminal block and coloured wires. With a terminal block they use black or brown wires.

Hello Cryotechnic,

Thanks for post. About this motor, I believe it was not made for U.S Market,because the wires are not marked with numbers (1,2...6)like NEMA´s Standard.Really I think is a motor manufactured for EUROPE, some manufacturers like ABB made your motors with colored wires and mainly for marine applications like cranes.The European designs are made under IEC Standards and all motor have connection block.

Best Regards

There is no requiremnt under IEC standards relatating to the colours of stator leads and therefore no conformity between makers. ABB and Leroy-Somer are just 2 makes that spring to mind that use different 6 different coloured leads in conjunction with a marked terminal block.

Thank you all very much! The motor is up & running. The Hanning web site came up with the answer from Gerald Stork. This is a motor manufactured about 22 years ago! When it came to me someone had removed and lost the terminal box and all I had were the loose leads. The connections are as follows:

u1 = black
u2 = green
v1 = blue
v2 = white
w1 = brown
w2 = yellow

Thanks again!
